Yeah Vince, I was just thinking yesterday that they outta go with some heavy weights next go around...I nominate you.
See you around, Johnny

All the other forums are flooded with thread about Spike Tv's The Ultimate Fighter show. I'm interested in what the RMATA guys think about it.

In my opinion, definitely don't force your current students (partners) into compliance to suite your prospective ones.
Some schools, like Krav Maga, hold introductory cla*ses with a group of potential students. This will prevent the new student from feeling like an outsider and will provide him with a group atmosphere where he can feel welcome.
In this intro. there should be a portion of the cla*s where the instructor explains the philosophy of the gym (school) and what is expected of them. It should be explained why training is conducted the way that is and how much more effective it will be.
TMA into cla*ses that I have seen, routinely throw one person in with a group that has been training together for a period of time. The new student rarely asks questions and usually feels intimidated by the more advanced students. The student may or may not show up again.
I come from a very traditional background. The style included many katas and choreographed reactions, proper where of gi at all times, and rarely questioning the sensei.
Lately, I trained with several outstanding fighters. Some participate in formal training (with a twist) and others participate in informal training focusing on street applications.
The key factor is knowing that I will be an effective fighter in all ranges of combat, and knowing that I have training partners who care enough to put a hurting on me in training, and enough to lift me up afterwards. Having intense yet safe training partners with "no egos, no attitudes, and no politics" is the only way to go. Unfortunately, I've never seen a TMA without them.

Thanks, and if I remember right Gokor in an instructor for that retreat as well. Anyone ever attend? I'd like to hear some feedback on it...

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah, actually going to Thailand was a real stretch for me and it was doubtful. I was really looking more for a camp in the US. I've seen a few on the net. But anyway, I will look into Rob Kaman's videos and go from there. Appreciate the input.

I've been reading up on some of those Muay Thai training camps, where you train for about a week with some top thai fighters. Don't think I'd ever actually travel to Thailand, though I'd love to, but maybe a Fairtex camp or something local.
I've picked up a little bit of Muay Thai and self-trained I guess, but I'd like to get some training to clean up some of the techniques. My question is:
Do y'all think that in a week someone can learn enough to take back home and drill with training partners? I think it would be an obvious yes since we all attend 4 - 8 hr seminars with the same expectations. But my question I guess is geared more toward Muay Thai. I mean you have two fists, feet, elbows, knees and shins - isn't the rest putting the combos together? ... oh yeah and defense. Interested in y'all's comments and thoughts....

Just like many others, I too fell into the TMA mindset. I practiced my katas and choreographed drills. I bowed into the dojo and kept my gi spotless. My Sensei was truely a wonderful man.
But...also like many others, I came across NHB/MMA and realized that I wasted countless hours on something that didn't work. There was more than one occasion that I was taken down by former high school wrestlers that I out weighed by 50 lbs!
After going through your seminars and training that come from Tony Blauer, Straight Blast Gym, the Singer Bros. etc, I can't see ever going back. Any TMA should try just a one day seminar...somewhere, anywhere, and they too would see the light.
It's great that people have such body control to do some of the amazing katas out there today, it takes discipline no doubt. But what are we training for...fighting or entertainment?

Yeah lead hooks on same side: a la Mike Tyson.
I'll keep my fingers crossed. Some of my buddies just got back from Straight Blast Spring Camp, the Kojukan is hosting a seminar with Soneca Moreira in May, and I'm looking at training with R. Couture in Baytown (Houston) in June. This could be an awesome year.
Take care bud, Johnny

Not much of a kicker, so I like: jab, cross, hook to the body, hook to the head.
Simple but effective.

Ref: the skills camp...I'm trying to get some of the guys from our group to roadtrip up. Everyone seems pretty excited about the idea, but schedule conflicts may prevent our attendence. Will the video be available to those who did not attend??? STILL looking forward to the curriculum! See you around buddy... Hey Vince,
I've been wondering what regular guys like me can do to help promote the new a*soc. I'm not a world cla*s athlete by any means, but I'd like to do my part of spreading the philosophies and training regiments of the group.
So far I've used word of mouth and postings on other forums. Looking forward to the curriculum and future seminars.
Keep up the great work, Johnny Guerrero tac364@yahoo.com

Well I haven't competed...yet. As we've talked about before, as an adult my weight has been anywhere from 164 to 242 and everywhere in between. I'm 5-8 and have some broad shoulders. I think I feel pretty good at 185 or so, but not sure what would be best for my frame. Thanks.

I was just wondering....How does a fighter/trainer determine what fighting weight is right for him/his fighter?
Of course there are charts that show the "acceptable" height/weight relations, but many of those are outdated or don't really apply in this case.
Hoping someone out there had experience with this....
Thanks, Johnny

Hey Vince, James has been working hard to schedule semimars for the rest of the year and 2006 - some grade A training (ex. Adam/Rory Singer, possibly Matt Thornton). He was sporting the RMATA shirt last night at his UFC 55 party. I know everyone enjoyed the seminar. I'll touch base with him - - or maybe he'll see this, but I know there is plenty of interest in and around San Antonio. Not sure of the locations??? Let me know if you are doing any anywhere near Texas and we'll see if we can squeeze it in your schedule and shorten the trip. laterz. Johnny www.tabmoc.com
