Wow! It's February and this is the first post of the year... Anyway, in working dilligently on the thai pads and a heavy bag yesterday, my wrists are screaming at me. I also broke the metacarpal of my index finger a couple of months ago and it just doesn't want to heal. I take ibuprophin for the discomfort and inflamation but, outside of that, I really don't know what to do. I want my wrists and hands to grow stronger so, I'm not real sure I want to wrap them every time I hit the bags. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance,

About two months ago, we attended a seminar and contributed as requested by the facilitator. I had noticed a couple of guys who train in Judo rolling and got "giddy". I asked if I could play and they reluctantly allowed me to. Little did I know that these guys were high level black-belts and were just being nice. Long story short, I was waiting to counter an arm bar that was applied in a way that I'd not actually seen used. While waiting, I heard a few "pops" in my elbow...I didn't tap soon enough as I was waiting for the other leg to cross my body... I can still function but, experience some discomfort when I move something heavy or while in training. How long should I expect to have discomfort in that elbow? I don't believe it is bad enough to go see a doctor but, it will certainly prove to be a factor in any tournaments that I play in. I did also see the value in being reminded that it's never a bad thing to tap in practice. Any experienced responses are very much appreciated.

Being new (only two tournaments under my belt), I have discovered that I am lacking agility...basic, lower body agility. The type that allows you to move your body around and opponent quickly and with precision.
I have been working fervently on my stamina and core strength (at the sacrifice of resistance training). I had back surgery almost 2 years ago and lost what little quickness I had (rather, misplaced).
I can perform the moves that I've been taught at a fluid pace but, struggle when we go dynamic. Even at Vince's seminar I could see that I'm currently not agile enough for some of them. Especially against an agile opponent.
What drills, exercises, stretches do you more seasoned practitioners use to improve on agility? Any suggestions or anecdotes would be very much appreciated.

I just started a boot camp style program at my local gym that provides interval, anarobic training. After testing with Vince this last Saturday I discovered that I *really* need to develop more wind. These are high intensity, short interval drills that I'm hoping will help with my 'wind' problem.

GREAT POST!!! I think that complaints about *not* following these rules bears further discussion. When I give lectures or seminars about self-defense and it's real meaning: stay out of the fight in the first place. The arguments I get back from the college age group is the idealistic statement that, "I should be able to go where ever I want, dressed however I want and not have to worry about being attacked". Yes, this is true...logically, one *should* be able to roam about any place at any hour in any fashion. That is a true statement...except, not everyone shares the same idea of "truth". Some thug's "truth" may be, "I should be able to have a hot woman like that"...and offer no further thought into the matter until after the a*sault has happened. I have worked in a jail and have found that these thugs are great at retrospection. "I shouldn't have stolen that guy's stuff"...I'd hear almost every day. But, I don't believe they ever had that train of thought *before* they behaved in such a manner. So, while idealism makes for a good argument, it's best to follow the wisdom in the beginning of this post.

Though I cannot bring myself to qualify it as a weapon, I carry a CRKT (Columbia River Knife and Tool) Folder model M16-13z. It is thin, fitting in my front pocket just right and could deploy rather quickly in the event that I could justify doing so. It is a great tool and sharpens rather easily. It does a great job field dressing the whitetail that I take with my beloved RRA AR-15. I suppose that I would use it as a very last resort but, it would have to be a very cognicent decision. I would be more inclined to find a weapon that would give me a bit more range in a tough situation, like a stick, chair, computer monitor,...etc. I used to work as an unarmed (by preference) security/bouncer at various Latino bars in the Hill Country and found my flashlight and kubaton to be my two favorite secondary tools. My reason and soft tone worked most of the time. I hope that continues to work for me...

Oh boy! You're getting married, huh. It is said that marriage consists of 3 rings: The engagement ring, the wedding ring, and then the suffering. Good luck and I hope that your marriage is richly blessed.

Vince, I just wanted you to know that what you teach has proven effictive. I had my very first tournament (the Bushido Challenge that I posted here) and only one match in my weight cla*s. Further, only one point was scored on a takedown from a middle clinch. But, it was enough for me to win. The takedown was the one you taught us from the middle clinch position where you strike *cough* with the upper arm and pull down with the other (under hook). We practiced it at the seminar you gave in S.A. and it won the day for me. Thanks for taking the time with the newbies (me) and giving me a fighting chance against a much stronger opponent (the guy can likely bench press 2 of me). Another attendee (Jeremy, I think was his name) wiped up the matt with an opponent that was very intense and in very good shape. He submitted the guy twice and controlled the entire 2x2min match. He made a great showing.
Once again, you're tried and proven techniques show to be effective and very beneficial. Thank you for being so bold as to share your knowledge. You are raising the bar in the sport and the community.

The Bushido Challenge II W.S.K.A. presents Bushido Challenge II Sparring and no-gi grappling tournament. Saturday September 17. This tournament is a Beginner and Novice level tournament only. Location: Y.W.C.A. gym 503 Castroville Rd, San Antonio TX time 10:00am to 2:00pm. more information@ www.wskachampion.com or call sensei Morris Arredondo (830) 896-1987. We are expecting a good showing of beginner and novice level grapplers to showcase what they have learned and get their feet wet in the world of Texas grappling. I also have it on good authority that there will likely be some great looking, state level beauty contestants there for pictures and autographs. It would be nice for all of the veterans in the area to come out and show support for the people just getting into the sport. If you're in the area, we'd love to see you there.

Vince - I cannot thank you enough for your time and willingness to share what you know. So many people who "teach" seem almost afraid to raise the bar by educating more people in self defense and combat arts. It's refreshing to know that there are people out there who are taking the time and showing the love of the arts and sport.
I'll be waiting for the notes to become available so that my instructor(s) and I can drill on them. We will also continue to work towards advancement in your ranking system.
Again, thank you.

It's using the popular platform (about played out in my opinion) of reality TV to showcase MMA and bolster its popularity. I have friends and relatives who once turned their noses up to UFC, King of the Cage, local shows, ...etc. who now love to watch the sport. Though I hate reality shows, I think it's good for the sport.

Looking into some other systems for supplemental training, I am considering a couple of options (that are available to me). One of these is American Kenpo. What I'd like to get is some insight by this community; as I find this to be a pretty neutral group of people, not slanted by personal biases.
~What experiences have (any of) you had with American Kenpo (EPAK, Tracy's, or Speakman)? ~What is your general opinion on Kenpo in terms of the RMATA principals of practicality? ~Can you speak on any compelling issues for or against this particular system as a field of study?
I thank everyone who replies in advance. Please be as objective as possible in your response.
God bless,

Thank you for your response, Mr Cogswell. I've looked at several and am certain that I'll take coverage from one of them as I just cannot see myself *not* having insurance. But then, I'm also the guy who put an attorney on retainer and has never used the law firm for anything. Funny, I'm more afraid of being sued than anything else...

First off --- HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I was wanting to know how many schools pay for insurance (general, accident, ..etc.) and who they use. Moreover, what (if any) types of experiences have you had with filing claims and general customer service?
Considering the prospect of someday opening a school and I just cannot see *not* having insurance. I know that martial arts facilities tend to have low injury rates vs. other sports but, how can someone sleep at night without it given the litigious society we live in. No offense to any who don't carry insurance on their school. My instructor doesn't carry insurance and I worry about him.
Alas! I ramble on...thanks to all who replay and may all who read this have a blessed New Year.

Whoa! You're going to have a long row to hoe in attempts to gather that type of data...not many shortcuts available to you there. Good luck and post the results, cuz that's good information and good a marketing tool for instructors.

Vince, Greetings. Well wishes from the Great State of Texas. I hope that all is well and you are bathing in prosperity. There are still several of us just chomping at the bits in eager anticipation for the cirriculum and DVD to be made available. How're they progressing? I've also been trying to hide money from my wife so that I can make a trip to Carbondale and steal some of your time as well. I know you shouldn't have to hide money from your wife but, if I want to visit the lair of Vincent the Great...that's what I must do. Apologies for pestering you about the cirriculum and further well wishes for you and yours.
~May we all find Peace until disturbed. Then, may we earn victory.

Hey Vince, Sorry to nag..but, you shouldn't make this stuff this good. How are things progressing with the cirriculum? I'd like to be able to start working on the requirements for level two as soon as they are made available. Having said that, I know that you keep a busy schedule so don't feel like we're all tapping our foot and being impatient...as for me...I'm just excited to continue.
Do you plan on coming back to San Antonio in the near future or will it be around the same time in the calendar year (June-ish)? I can't wait to be there.
Thanks for all that you do and keeping us motivated and eager...like kids outside a toystore.

So, the million dollar question is...do we have an anticipated date of release for the cirriculum?
