I have posted the URL to crossfit.com ‘Exercises’. Scroll down to the section labeled Misc Demos, there is a video of John Hackleman demonstrating how to throw a left hook (it’s the 11th link) What do you guys think about keeping the hands out and low (like Chuck Liddell.) during a fight? Dose the shoulder offer as much protection for the chin as hands/arms? I understand what John is saying however, I am not sure that I buy into it. I am not convinced that I or anyone else with an average ‘chin’ should learn to strike like Chuck Liddell. Chuck’s ability to take blows to the chin allows him (so far) to get away with this type of stance. I am not convinced that this approach would be affective for most of us. Thoughts??? www.crossfit.com/cf-info/excercise.html

I've got to agree with you Mark, I don't prefer the method he's showing either. You see so many guys getting KO'd when they wouldn't have if they had just had their hands up high and tight. that goes for high level strikers as well.
if you keep your front hand out, sure, it may be closer to your target but is it really worth the sacrafice of having a more exposed head/ chin? Not in my opinion at all. Now I know that Chuck makes that style work very well for him but I certainly wouldnt recommend it, especially for a beginner or for self-defense training. For training your reaction following a flinch or to a sucker punch you want those hands as high and tight as you can get them, because someone will likely be trying to take your head off.
Also, just because you have your hands up high and tight doesn't mean you have to telegraph your strikes at all. They can still be very direct and quick with practice.
To each his own though. We can't deny the success that Chuck has be implimenting this unorthadox style.

I'm training a couple of guys now who want to both have a "Liddell Style". One is a former wrestler and golden gloves boxer. He has adapted the style well. Before, I could clinch and take him down with ease, now with the Liddell style he is very tough to get hold of. I taught him a little of Cro Crop's anti-grappling also.
I've studied Liddell hard. I appreciate him more and more. I can't explain why everything works, but much of his success comes from his footwork. His footwork is his first defense. Second is that as soon as you grab him he becomes a wrestler again.

Interesting.
I certainly wouldnt suggest that anyone concentrate on learning a style of striking that involves keepin your hands low... but it sure works for Chuck.

I can’t argue with Chuck’s success. He defiantly seems to be the 'anti-grappler' (being an excellent grappler him self).

The best skill Chuck has is ring control, he controls distance real good. I didn't like Chuck holding his hands low until I realized how good he is at controlling distance, he keeps the hands low to draw you in, if you step with a stiff jab you're open to a kick to the lead leg. Come rushing in he'll step to the side and pound away. He's got good skills!

Interesting thing with Chuck, he got KOed by Quinton who stalked him, kept his hands high and hit hard. Quinton's style is pretty sensible and it seems he beat Chuck for the reasons people aren't quite convinced about his style.

Yeah, Chuck has a decent chin and great take down defense for sure. His sprawl is awesome. He also has killer leg kicks, but he doesn't use them much for some reason. His style is VERY risky, and he has gotten away with it for so long because of his solid power, but a smart striker can see right through his defense. Most guys have tried to make a ground fight out of their bouts with Chuck, unsuccssfully. Rampage kept is simple and beat Chuck where he was weak, in the head!

Chuck hasn't been using his kicks lately because he has been set up with grapplers so much and he doesn't want to give them an easy single. Strangely, he still didn't use much in the way of kicks against Jardine. The interesting thing there is Jardine has a rather awkward style too, and also beat Chuck. I'm curious how much the leg kicks factored in.
