This is a great example of someone who has been "doing" non-realistic martial arts for his whole life. He has convinced himself (or at least his students) of the mysterious and magical powers of martial arts, and obviously had avoided the route of simply actually sparring in all ranges of combat against resisting opponents. This could be is a great wakeup call for him. I doubt he will actually learn from the experience and begin realistic training though... I bet his ego can't take it.
