Ahh, thanks for clearing that up guys. Thats still one BIG bear!
Here is the article that debunks the original story.
Origins: The photographs displayed above are authentic, and the basic story of their origins are correct, but, predictably, some of the details have been altered or exaggerated as the pictures have traveled around the Internet.
The slain bear shown in these images was shot to death in October 2001 by 22-year-old airman Ted Winnen stationed at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska. His encounter with the enormous ursine took place while he was deer hunting on Hinchinbrook Island in Prince William Sound, as he described to an Anchorage Daily News reported in December 2001: Winnen and three hunting buddies were dropped off on Hinchinbrook Island in the heart of Prince William Sound by an air taxi on a cool, rainy Oct. 14 morning.
Hinchinbrook is a 165-square-mile island near Cordova with an estimated population of about 100 brown bears, giving it the distinction of harboring the highest density of bears of any island in the Sound, according to Dave Crowley, Cordova area wildlife biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Four to six bears are killed by hunters on the island every year, though rarely one of more than 400 pounds.
Winnen wasn't there to hunt bear. Instead, he and his hunting buddies packed for a week of hunting for Sitka blacktail deer on the remote, wooded island. Winnen did, however, pick up a permit to shoot a bear just in case.
On day two of the group's hunt, the skies cleared at 8:30 a.m. Winnen and Eielson Staff Sgt. Jim Urban set out to follow a creek bed upstream looking for deer. Urban was carrying a .300-caliber Winchester Magnum. Winnen was carrying his significantly more powerful .338-caliber Winchester Magnum in case a bear crossed their path.
In the creek, they spotted a deep pool with 20 salmon circling.
''By this time, the ... run was over and the salmon were looking pretty nasty,'' Winnen said. ''We started thinking that we were looking at a bear's dinner plate.''
That got Winnen in what he calls ''bear mode.''
The two men continued following the creek upstream until they came to a small island ringed with thick brush. Some end-of-season blueberries clung to the surrounding brush. In the middle of the island was a spruce tree larger than what Winnen could fit his arms around. At the base of the tree were signs that an animal had tried to dig a hole.
About 9:30 a.m., Winnen glanced upstream.
Forty yards away was a big brown bear with all four paws in the creek, flipping over logs looking for salmon.
"He's a shooter," Urban said under his breath.
"So I started getting in the zone," Winnen said. "When I am going to take an animal, I am really concentrating. We racked shells into our guns and took off our packs and left them by the tree."
The hunters moved a few feet upstream. About halfway between them and the bear was a large fallen tree.
"I said, 'When the bear crawls over that log, he will present his vital areas and we'll take him,'" Winnen recalled. "I brought the rifle up to take a shot, but the bear moved over the log like it wasn't there.
"I thought, 'Oh crap.' I didn't have a chance to get a shot off."
As the bear kept coming along the creek, the two hunters momentarily lost sight of him in a thicket, so they retreated back to the big spruce.
"We were sitting there concentrating when, a few seconds later, he pops up right in front of us, about 10 yards away and he was coming toward us," Winnen said. "I don't know if the wind was in our favor or what. We were dressed in camouflage. He might not have seen us."
"I put the scope on him. I wanted to hit him in the chest, but all I seen was nothing but head.
"My partner said, 'Shoot! Shoot!'" Winnen said. "I aimed for his left eye, but the bullet takes an arc and I hit about two inches low in the side of his muzzle and into his brain.
"He buckled backwards and raised his head like he was going to howl at the moon, but nothing came out,'' Winnen said. ''I put two more rounds in the vital area, then three more after that. Six total."
"It was amazing"
"We watched for a few minutes, I reloaded and Jim brought his gun up on him," Winnen said. "I approached from the rear and poked him in the butt to see if he was going to jump, but he didn't move. He was dead."
"It was amazing when I got close to him," Winnen said.
"I picked up the paw and it was like, 'good God.' The thing was as wide as my chest."
After the kill, Winnen and Urban spent six hours skinning the bear — and trying to drag its hide and skull back to the Forest Service cabin they had rented. As this account demonstrates, some of the details in the text that now accompanies these photographs is incorrect:
* Ted Winnen, who shot the bear, was an airman with the U.S. Air Force, not a Forest Service employee.
* The bear was large, but not a "world record 12 feet 6 inches high at the shoulder" and weighing "over one thousand six hundred pounds." The ursine bagged by Mr. Winnen measured 10 feet, 6 inches from nose to tail and its weight was estimated at between 1,000 to 1,200 pounds — an extraordinarily large bear for the Prince William Sound area (about double the average size), but not a world record.
* The bear was coming towards Winnen and his hunting partner from about 10 yards away, but nobody knows for sure whether it was "charging them." According to the two hunters, the bear may not even have been aware of their presence.
* Winnen bagged the bear with a .338-caliber Winchester Magnum, not a "7mm Mag Semi-auto."

The pictures below are of a man who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska and his trophy bear. He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head. The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. It stood 12' 6" high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. It's the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world. Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport to remind tourists of the risks involved when in the wild. Based on the contents of the bear's stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours including a missing hiker. The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hiker's 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol was the remains of the hiker. The other body has not been found. Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (the Service ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bear's dead body), it only wounded the bear and probably angered it immensely. The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear's own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker. Think about this: If you are an average size man; You would be level with the bear's navel when he stood upright. The bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours! To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in the bedroom windows.

LOL. Brilliant! We deffinently have a great look going for Boyd here. I'm not sure if Boyd is married or not... but if so we need to see how his wife's face would look on Dog's wife's body. Could be a great fugitive recovery team.

Bill, I have always been interested in this sort of business. My degree is in Administration of Justice and it has also piqued my interest in this field.
There is a good older movie that I cant remember the name of. The main character was an older white gentleman who ran a bail bonds business and he did fugitve recovery on the side. He was extremely professional and I really liked the movie. I think Robert Deniro might have been one of the bad guys in the movie as well. Anyway, you might like it if you get a chance to see it. If I remember the name I'll post it here later.
Keep us informed of any information you get about this business or if anything develops in the future with you doing it. I could deffinently see myself doing something like that part time. Not only the detective work, but then also dressing up like "Dog" with tight arm bands and growing a mullet.. of course.

That is great to hear. I believe that fighting back is a much better idea than just trusting your life in the hands of armed robbers or attackers and hoping that they will be good people and not injure you. They have already proven to be scum with low moral values and can only be trusted to do the unethical thing, being the predators they are.

Great article Bill. Here is is below for anyone who doesn't want to download it from a different website. The Seven Golden Rules of Conscious Choice Violence Avoidance When you read the paper, watch the news, and surf the self-protection forums, one would think that violence is rampant, and that no matter where you go or what you do in life, the chances of being confronted with violence are always a clear and present danger. Although violence in all of its forms is a reality in today’s world, it has been my experience, as a serving LEO, that there are certain situations (that are controllable by you through conscious choice) that can lead themselves to increased risk that if one was to avoid, would definitely decrease the overall threat of being confronted with physical violence. Known as, “The Seven Golden Rules of Conscious Choice Violence Avoidance” they include: 1) Don’t drink alcohol to excess, and don’t frequent establishments or events where people will likely drink excessively: The over consumption of alcohol is the number one contributing factor to physical violence in my opinion. It is because of this fact that one should stay away from “known” establishments or events where people will likely drink excessively which includes; bars, special events, and house parties. If you do frequent these types of locations, to limit the risk, leave early before the liquid courage has had time to take full effect. 2) Don’t use illegal drugs, and don’t frequent establishments, events, or frequent areas where people are likely to be found using illegal drugs: This is the number two contributing factor to physical violence. Drugs, much like alcohol, squew one perception of reality. Those who partake in illegal drugs, especially those who use Central Nervous System stimulants such as cocaine, crystal meth, Ketamine are more prone to violent outbursts. It is because of this fact that one should stay away from establishments, events, or even areas of town where drug use is commonplace. 3) Don’t get caught up in the “my thingy is bigger than your thingy” argument, especially with those who you do not know: Many acts of violence that I have investigated had everything to do with “Ego” and “Saving Face” and when combined with alcohol and drugs, things can become even more explosive. Remember, you may be right, but in the end you could be dead right. Wherever possible ignore the challenge and walk away. 4) Don’t get sexually involved, make negative comments, or non-verbally challenge another person’s husband, wife, boyfriend, or girlfriend: Need I say more on this !!!!!!!!! 5) Don’t relinquish control or faculties when dating: This is directly related to issues surrounding alcohol and drugs. If you can’t control yourself, then others may. 6) Don’t frequent those areas of town or events that have a history of violence: Every city has a “Red Zone” where most criminal acts are committed. Avoid these areas wherever possible, or if you have to travel within the red zone, heighten you awareness level. There are also public event that also invite the potential for random acts of violence (usually because of the over consumption of alcohol) be aware that while attending these events, your risks of dealing with violence are also heightened. 7) Don't a*sociate with people who have a penchant for violent or dangerous behavior, have poor self-control, poor judgment, are controlling, deceptive, manipulative, untrustworthy, or participate in illegal activity: Even if you're staying away from trouble areas and not starting any problems yourself, if you a*sociate with friends and acquaintances (not to mention family members or significant others/spouses) that are violent or untrustworthy, you'll end up in bad situations again and again. Look for things like someone who's always getting angry or upset, who changes friends a lot, can't drink responsibility, can't manage their finances, is arrogant and abrasive, is misogynistic or racist, or has a history of fighting and run-ins with the law. This requires being a good judge of character and having the guts to cut someone out of your life if they exhibit some of the warning signs, even if they otherwise seem like a "nice person." (punisher77 ,Senshido Forum, 2005) It is uncanny how many times I have investigated a fight that was actually initiated by the victim's friend who fit the above noted criteria. These guys are commonly known as nuts magnets. Many who read this posting will say, “d**n, I might as well be a hermit because you have taken all the fun out of life.” I’m not saying don’t have fun and enjoy life to the fullest, but what I am saying is that life is about choices, and with those choices come both positive and negative consequences. Many of my friends that I hang with outside of policing have never had to deal with violence, why, because they followed the six golden rules. Those that have had to deal with physical violence, or a criminal attack, did so because they did not take heed of the six golden rules, or were preyed upon by the street predator because of no situational awareness, and were thus targeted as a safe mark. The message of this posting: AVOIDANCE, combined with SITUATIONAL AWARENESS, will go along way in preventing a violent physical altercation in one’s life. See my article “Street 101” for situational awareness information: www.personalprotectionsystems.ca/The%20Way%20Of%20The%20Street%20Street%20101.doc Darren Laur www.personalprotectionsystems.ca

OK folks, this happened to me today. What would you do?!?!
I was in a very crowded city downtown today with packed pedestrian traffic. My wife and I were walking, and it was close to 5pm. We were nearing an intersection, and the light was green for us to walk across. However the crowd was so bad that we were packed in like sardeens, and my wife had to walk right behind me so she could hold on to my coat and let me sort of clear the way for her.
The light switched for the signal for us not to walk and the crowd stopped in front of us, with me being about the 5th person back from the street, with all of us now waiting on the light to give us the signal to walk again.
There was a white guy in front of me, about 40 years old. He was about 6'2, 275 and was wearing a green old army jacket. He looked a bit chubby, but still strong with wide shoulders. He had a big brown beard, a small afro, and looked to be either homeless or just very dirty. He was seeming to act claustrophobic with the crowd pushed up against him on all sides. There was zero room for anyone to move as the crowd was pushing in close and tight, with no room ahead with the traffic in front, to the right with traffic on that street, or to the left with a big brick building there.
Well this guy starts making wierd shouting noises, and I knew he had some sort of mental issue. He tries pushing through some people but fails as there is just no where to go. He then turns around, stepping on my foot and wants to escape, but there is no room. He then unexpectedly drives forward into me with a driving shoulder strike, trying to knock me down (and obviously wanting to run off somewhere he can get some breathing room). He might have knocked me down since his strike caught me toatally off-guard, has not the crowd been right behind and all around me preventing me from having the room to fall. However remember, my wife was right behind me and I fealt her face get smahed hard into my back and heard her cry out in pain. I was pissed immediatly, and I grabbed the guy, as he was still pushing into me futally. I was going to tell him to calm down, but before I had time he grabbed me firmly with his left hand on the upper right chest of my jacket, and at the same time he drove his right hand into the front of his army jacket pocket. At this instant I just knew it was going for a knife, as he was toatally freaking out. As he was doing this he yelled "Mother F_ _ _ _ R". Time froze for me... he was strong and had a good grip on the front of my jacket and was about to bring something out of his pocket... that something which I would have bet anything was going to be a knife. There was nowhere for me to move to... the crowd was simply too pressed in.
And then I woke up.... seriously. Yep, this was a dream I just had and I immediatly thought that it would make a good "what would you do?" post... so now you have it. I never have paranoid dreams like this... I suspect it is due to some of the holiday I food I ate at my family's house which made my stomach quite upset.
So what would you do? I remember thinking about it when I first woke up... and I really felt like I was in trouble and about to get stabbed. There are various schools of thought of how to deal with an edged weapon. They are usually broken down into 2 ways of thinking... if you cant run then strike first then try to disarm, or control the weapon first with both hands and then try to disarm. Personally I lean more towards controlling the weapon first, striking as a means to cause a bit of pain, which will enable an easy disarm. So in this specific case, with all this time to think about it of course, I would like to secure his right hand firmly with my left, not allowing it to move or come out of his pocket, and with my right hand give a serious eye jab at the same time. I would then immediatly put both of my hands on his right hand in an attempt to control and disarm whatever he was bringing out. Of course you never know what he would have pulled out. It could have been a knife, a pen, a gun, or even an athsma inhaler to take a shot.
So what would you do?

OK, here's what happened. As I got out of my car and began walking towards the entrance of Wal Mart the driver had exited her car and was coming at me full speed, uttering profanities and threats all the while. She was saying something to the effect of "I'm gonna kick your a_ _ right now... RIGHT NOW mother f_ _ _ er." I felt pretty sure that she was going to strike me, which wasn't that scary of a thought given that I was pretty sure she would not know how to throw a punch properly. I'd have been in trouble though if she did know how to put her weight behind it.
Anyway, my main concern was for my wife who was right beside me. Normally I would not allow anyone who was displaying such aggression to come within 1 arm's distance of me, and I would step back and launch a pre-emptive strike if the ignored my orders for them to stop. However this woman could hear nothing that I was saying since she was at top volume. I stepped back when she came close but she continued on and got right up to me, chest to chest. She was pumping herself up verbally, and I still expected a strike to come at any moment. I knew there would be witnesses to this and I decided that no matter what she said, I would not do anything physical until I had been a*saulted first. I would not have taken this strategy if it had been a male, or even a real tough looking female.
Anyway… she is screaming in my face still, and my efforts to calm her down and talk this situation out cannot even be heard. Her larger pa*senger friend has stopped at the rear of her car, about 5 feet away from us, behind the driver to her left. The driver continues this screaming at me, and sort of chest bumping me for quite a while. I try to walk around her to grab my wife and go to the entrance of Wal Mart, but she cuts me off with her body. After maybe 60 seconds of this screaming (which seemed like an eternity to me) she stops… sort of like she didn’t know what to do since I just stood there letting her go on. The she looks over at my wife… my 100-pound Asian wife, and decides to turn her fury on her. She begins screaming at my wife and starts quick stepping to get right up to her, but I would not allow this to happen. I jumped in between them before the driver could get in her face and I held my arms out so that she could not get in my face again. The driver tried to push into me to get close again, but I kept my arms extended and would not allow it. There was no way I was going to let this woman get in my wife’s face, who was standing there with her jaw dropped open in shock of the whole situation this whole time. I turned my head to my wife and told her to run inside of Wal Mart right now and to call the police. The driver was trying to push into and around me to get to my wife now, and I had to push back to keep her away. My wife was frozen and I yelled for her to go inside now and call the police.
This was when the driver hit me. She hit me with a right haymaker as I was looking towards my wife. There wasn’t much behind it and it didn’t do any damage, only because she didn't know how to strike properly. When the pa*senger saw this she ran up to me and gave me an openhanded smack/ claw on the left side of my neck that drew small lines of blood on my neck. I didn’t even try to block it as I was hoping witnesses would see all of this. When my wife saw them hit me she ran up close and wanted to help, but didn’t know what to do.
Now here is where I had a decision to make. What do I do now? If I had been alone I would have grappled with them both, probably throwing them (not too hard) to the ground and when possible stacking them on top of each other, holding them there until help or the police came. However I was not alone, and I was afraid of my wife getting injured in this melee. If one of these women fell on her they could possible cause serious injury. They had both just struck me unprovoked, and I knew my wife would be struck very soon if I didn’t do something. As they were striking they were yelling at me still, and the pa*senger woman had joined in on the yelling. They really had their selves pumped up for this. I wanted this physical altercation to be over immediately, and I was not going to try to grapple them one at a time with my wife so close.
So as soon as the 2nd strike hit me, I threw 2 quick crosses… one to the driver and one to the pa*senger. The punches were straight and crisp, landing on the jaw/ chin of each. It took maybe 1 second total for both punches to land. I intentionally took a lot of power off of the punches so that I wouldn’t cause serious injury to the women, but the half power punches still knocked them both back into their car and dropped them to the ground.
For the first time in what seemed like forever there was sudden and total silence. After 10 seconds or so the women got up, clutching their faces, but were no longer shouting or advancing. I again told my wife to go inside and call the police, and this time she did.
Very soon after that a black woman ran up… and I was surprised at what she said to the 2 women. She said “I saw him beating on you 2 from across the parking lot”. I asked her if she saw them hit me first, and she said something like “you’re in a lot of trouble”. I didn't bother speaking to her again as I knew she was either lying or missed the part where they hit me first.
Anyway, the police came, got everyone’s story and took written statements. I asked them if they would check the Wal Mart security camera so they could see that the story was exactly as I described it. The 2 women lied to the police, telling them basically that I just beat them up and they had done nothing wrong. After the officer who I gave my statement to got the whole story, he told me he would have done the same thing if it could not have been avoided. I was told that they would be in touch soon if we needed to go to court or anything.
After a few days I called and spoke with that officer and he said the altercation was too far from the cameras and so they were not going to pursue it anymore. I had no desire to pursue it and charge the women with a*saulting me, because I felt it would already be a good lesson for them and I didn’t want to go through the legal trouble of trying to get them in trouble.
So the lessons learned or reinforced for me?
1. Be a defensive driver. 2. If someone is following you, go to a crowded area, or preferably a police station. Call the police while you are on the way. 3. Have a plan with your wife or partner for when this type of situation happens. 4. Have pepper spray ready for such a situation. Before they get within 1 arm’s distance, warn them not to and give them a face full of it if they still advance. 5. Don’t hit women. Sure, everyone’s heard that. However these attackers were not women… they were simply female. I hated to be forced to strike them, even if it wasn’t at full power, but I had to defend my wife and myself. I feel very confident that they brought this situation upon themselves. 6. Be aware of how race can play into situations. I feel that the black women “witness” only said what she said to the police because it was 2 black women against 1 white guy. I have nothing against any race, as I have friends, teachers, and students of all races. Heck, I am in an inter-racial marriage myself. However the reality of this world we live in is that there is often animosity among different races, and I experienced that in this situation for sure. While being yelled at by the 2 women, the pa*senger even called me the N word, which I just ignored like the rest of their verbal insults.
In hindsight I would have handled the situation a bit differently for sure, in that I would have simply kept driving until I wasn’t followed anymore or went to the police station. That would have avoided the whole situation. I also would have used mace on pepper spray on them if I had it with me... which I should have and now do. Oh well, hopefully some of you all can pick something up useful from this real experience I had.

Avoidance is always a great idea. Now Bill... if it came right down to the attack you would protect yourself but not return any force... even with someone you love there right next to you who cannot defend herself? How long would you defend her strikes? Just let her keep hitting at you until she stops? What if she or her 400 pound friend decide to go after your significant other?

Excellent reply Johnny. Being a police officer and a student of Tony Blauer's that is exactly the kind of thinking I would expect from you. Very good.
I'll get to my actions after several more replies to see what other folks who read this would do. I will say this though... I have studied Tony's material for years and am very aware of all that you mentioned in your last post... but if I could do it over I would have choosen different actions. Namely, I would'nt have stopped until they were not following me anymore to simply avoid the situation. If they continued to follow I should have driven to a safe place, such as my local PD, and called the PD to inform them of the situation. Part of what allowed this situation to even happen was that I was completely not expecting the situation and was not THINKING about self defense/ legal factors when it was suddenly upon me and so I was thrust into the fire before I had prepared for it.

OK, this happened to me close to a year ago. What would you do?
It's close to midnight and for some reason you and your spouse are heading to Wal Mart for a late night run of some things you need. You are lost in conversation with your partner, and you are driving. You look in your rear view to change into the right lane so you can make the turn to go into Wal Mart, and you see there is enough room, although it is not much extra room. As you turn your signal on and begin moving over, the car behind you in the right lane speeds up in an attempt to not let you in. But it's too late... your already in. They blare on their horn and start flashing their lights at you. They follow you very closely.
What do you do now? Do you park? Do you go home, or to the police station maybe? They continue to follow you closely into the parking lot as you turn down one isle to park..
I parked. They pulled their car up right behind mine, blocking off any exit by vehicle.
As you exit your vehicle there are 2 large (300+ pounds) black women in the car, and the driver is screaming profanities at you at the top of her lungs. They look very quite poor from the looks of their raggy clothes and old, beat up car. There is an empty baby seat in the back seat. You and your wife have exited the car and are walking towards wal-mart.
Do you ignore her? Do you say anything back in reply?
I said "when someone turns their turn signal on to change lanes you should not take that as your signal to speed up and not let them in". That was more than enough to get the driver flying out of the car at me.
So now you have a 300+ pound pissed off black woman screaming, and running up to you. She is screaming over and over "I am gonna beat your a*s... I am gonna beat your a*s... Right now Mother F_ _ _ _ er", as she is shaking and waving her hands around wildly". She is looking at both you and your partner with extreme anger showing on her face. She is screaming so loudly that there is no chance she could hear anything you might say to her. She is going to be in range to attack you within 2 seconds as she is approaching quickly. She looks like she is going to attack.
You notice that as she is exiting her vehicle, the pa*senger is also exiting and coming around to come over to you, and you can tell that she weighs closer to 400 pounds now that she is standing.
Your partner has exited the vehicle, and the driver is between you and wal mart, which is the way you need to go.
There is alot to think about and remeber in this situation. Remember, she is blocking your vehicle exit and is in between you and the entrance to Wal Mart. Remember... your momma and this society always told you not to hit women. Remember... your partner (if this is the case... as it was with mine) is not trained in self-defence. If your partner is well trained, then just imagine that it is a loved one with you that cannot defend herself... like your grandmother maybe. Remember... there are probably witnesses or a camera since this is the Wal Mart parking lot. Can you think of self-defense laws and the legal ramifications of your actions at this exact moment? Remember... this whole situation is on you before you had a chance to mentally prepare for it... it is the last thing you expected on this late night trip to the store and it has hit you like a ton of bricks. Remember... the 400+ pound pa*senger will be right up on you in about 5 seconds... just as soon as she can run around the car.
What do you do? Do you let her get within range to attack you? Do you initiate an attack? Do you try to walk away? Do you try to calm her down? Do you fall into the fetal position and cry?
I'll tell what I did after we have had several replies on what you would do.

The following is a article that I recommend everyone read! I was on an anti-terrorism team in Japan for a few years while in the Marines, and used to receive cla*ses and instruction on this sort of thing. This sort of mindset can really save alot of lives. Vince The Hidden Enemy: Sympathizers & Recon Personnel By: Frank Borelli We've all read stories about the middle-eastern appearing men with cameras taking pictures of bridges; the Coast Guard has asked boaters to keep a look out for people doing such things from boats; if we saw someone with an olive complexion and a camera walking around near fuel storage tanks most of us would take note. What about the things we just don't expect and therefore dismiss if we even notice it at all? Let me give you two examples: Example One: (names left out to protect sources and locations): a friend of mine and I were having lunch one day and we were discussing whether or not we had any local prime terrorist targets. The conversation evolved into a discussion of what behavior is "suspicious". That conversation evolved in to him telling me about a guy that his wife had recently started working with. His wife works at a large retail store that carries a wide variety of products to include clothing, cleaning supplies, food items, electronics, household items, etc. Think WalMart, Target, K-Mart, Sam's Club, BJ's Wholesale, etc. What made my friend's wife suspicious was that her new workmate - we'll call him Bob just so he has a name - what made my friend's wife suspicious of Bob were the circumstances of his hiring and the questions he'd been asking since he started. It seems that he was hired based on his application (no surprise there). On his application he had listed a significant amount of managerial experience with other retail stores, and as a result he was hired into an entrance-level management position with the store in question. What made that suspicious? He hadn't provided a resume or any supporting documentation with his application. He was hired into a management position that gave him greater access to information and store security procedures without any verification of the experience he claimed in order to get that position. The only document he submitted with his application was a copy of his driver's license. It would not have been uncommon for that to be an out-of-state license because there is a large military installation and many service-members' spouses don't get driver's licenses for our state. So, he gets hired and starts working before his background is confirmed. Then the questions start. Bear in mind that all of these questions might be legitimate questions from a newly hired entrance-level management employee. How long is the food left on the shelves before we rotate it? How long is food left in the trailer (outside) before it's unloaded? Are the chemicals (cleaning supplies, torch fuels, propane, etc) kept secure in any way? What are the security procedures for opening doors during the store's closed hours? How many people are in the store at night? What time do the cleaning people come in and go out? When are the doors unlocked for smoke break? (He didn't smoke) How much food is kept in the employee break area? OK: innocent questions, right? My suspicious mind thought, "How weird is this?" First, the guy gets hired without a background check or confirmation and second, he immediately starts asking questions that are all centered around store security or product security. Think I'm being paranoid? Think about this for a few minutes before calling me whacko: How many terrorists would it take to take over your local WalMart after it was closed? What would they need to know? What might they want to do or accomplish? Hmmm… They might want to know what time the doors are locked and unlocked during the hours the store is closed. They might want to know when the alarm is activated and deactivated. They might want to know how many employees are in the store at any given time. They might want to know at what times other people would expect to gain access or egress. They might want to know how much food they'd have on hand to sustain them through whatever time period their operation was being planned for. They might want to know what supplies they'd have to build improvised explosive devices. If they were planning on poisoning or infecting food items, they might want to know how it was stored or where it was kept that it might be accessible. Sure, I'm paranoid. This guy got hired with little or no background information and immediately wanted to know everything he'd need to know to set up a nice takeover of the store by as few as six to eight terrorists. If the "bad guys" could come up with twenty terrorist operatives willing to die taking over four planes do you think they could come up with eight or ten to take over a store? Poison a food supply? Do you think they'd enjoy doing that in a largely military community? So, I did what I thought was prudent: I pa*sed all this information along to a deputy I trusted who worked in the area of that store. Know what happened? As soon as someone in the store questioned the guy's background info, he resigned. Quit almost immediately. Nah; he wasn't up to anything. Example two: same statement about names: a police officer candidate is attending mandatory firearms training prior to being hired by a municipal agency. During the course of the cla*sroom portion, a conversation is had about Active Shooter training and how it could be applied to Terror-Response duties. If terrorists decided to attack malls, schools, etc in an effort to shut down our economy in the long term (a realistic possibility in my opinion), then Active Shooter training would be essential for the responding officers. Entering, possibly under fire, an area where subjects are actively shooting innocents to neutralize the threat. That sounds like Active Shooter, or Immediate Response, training to me. Well, one of the officer candidates speaks up and says, "Those guys who flew the planes into the World Trade Center towers weren't terrorists. They were freedom fighters defending their homeland and families." Oops - Someone's sensibilities had been stepped on. Then the instructor realized what that officer candidate had said. He was defending the actions of the terrorists who attacked our country and killed over 2,600 innocent people; not soldiers; men, women and children who were in no way involved in our armed forces. The instructor couldn't just leave that alone. Asking why the officer candidate believed that, the instructor received a brief discourse on how the United States of America is a collection of international criminals who habitually lie not only to the world, but also to all Americans through the use of media manipulation. He heard all about how the United States military has killed untold thousands of innocent citizens from other countries who America was unhappy with for economic or political reasons and then how all those bodies were buried in ma*s graces or destroyed by fire. Hmmm… The instructor felt it necessary to bring this officer candidate's political beliefs to the agency that was preparing to hire him. The Chief of Police at that agency was a man I know (for about twenty years now) and he listened to what the instructor had to say and took it seriously. The fact that there were other witnesses to the conversation and that officer candidate's statements made the Chief seriously consider whether or not he needed to hire the man. As it worked out, that officer candidate withdrew from the hiring process, lying to several officers about why (he made differing statements to three different officers) he was withdrawing. Shortly thereafter that same officer candidate was hired by a different municipality. The municipality that hired him was made aware of his political outlook and statements. He was still hired. Here is a man who is obviously sympathetic to the terrorist cause. He said so in front of a collection of witnesses. His agency was made aware of his statements (the instructor wrote the acting Chief of Police a letter to make sure he knew) but they hired him anyway. As a matter of observation, that officer proudly talks about his Muslim beliefs and how his religion makes him better than the "Christian trash" that surrounds him. (I am not attacking the Muslim faith - simply repeating what was said) This man is a police officer sworn to uphold the Constitution, and the laws of state, county and local governments. How can anyone take that oath seriously? Now, here I go being paranoid again. We know terrorists are trying to recruit Americans. We know terrorists gather pre-operation intelligence and plan accordingly. Terrorists know that things have changed in America since the attacks of nine-eleven. If I were a terrorist, wouldn't it be ideal for me to recruit someone who could become a police officer? He could then feed me back any and all information that came across that was "law enforcement restricted". He could show me what tactics and techniques officers were being taught to counter terrorist activities. He could show / tell me what tools, weapons, training officers had to use in the fight against me. Hell, if I were a terrorist, this would be my favorite intelligence operative. I say this again: this man is a police officer. In Roll Call he gets told about all lookouts, warnings, etc. What in the world is that agency thinking? There are two examples of what I term "the hidden enemy". The point I'm making though, is that they are not hidden. If the store manager who had hired Bob had been using his head, Bob wouldn't have been put on the schedule or payroll until after he'd proven his background. If the Acting Chief of Police who hired that officer candidate had been using his head, he wouldn't have hired the man at all. We, as Americans, cannot forget that the terrorists who hate us and wish to destroy our country - physically, emotionally or economically - are constantly studying us, looking for weaknesses. They are constantly learning what supplies we already have that they can use against us. They are constantly probing our security levels. They are gathering intelligence and looking for the tidbits of info that they can build into attack plans. That one store, in the first example, has literally thousands of patrons going in and out each day. A terrorist on the night crew could easily build an improvised explosive device with a timer to go off during peak shopping hours. That officer, in the second example, works within a convenient driving distance of our Nation's Capital and has access to every bit of controlled information normally disseminated to police agencies. Mistakes like this cannot be made. We are literally inviting the terrorists in to attack us. We're openly telling them how prepared (or not) we are and in what ways we will respond. Be mindful in your daily lives. Pay attention. If something looks suspicious, say something. Call someone's attention to the issue at hand. What's the worst that's going to happen? You're going to look paranoid? So be it. But if your information is acted on and it prevents a terrorist attack (or several) then the price paid for saving an unknown number of lives was a little humiliation. I'll take that every day of the week and twice on Sunday. www.borelliconsulting.com/index.htm

Subject: Windows HOW TO BURGLAR-PROOF YOUR WINDOWS Many burglars enter homes by simply breaking gla*s windows. A good deterrent is to have better quality gla*s installed at vulnerable points around the perimeter of your residence. Most burglars avoid attempting to break the following types of gla*s due to the fear of attracting attention. LAMINATED GLa*s is made by a vinyl or plastic inner layer sandwiched between two layers of gla*s. This type of gla*s adds additional strength to your windows. To gain entry, a burglar would have to strike the gla*s repeatedly in the same spot in order to make a small opening. Most burglars are reluctant to create this type of noise for fear of being detected. TEMPERED GLa*s is made by placing a piece of regular gla*s in an oven, bringing it almost to the melting point, and then chilling it rapidly. This causes a skin to form around the gla*s. Fully tempered gla*s is four to five times stronger than regular gla*s. WIRED GLa*s adds the benefit of a visible deterrent. Extra effort will be needed to break the gla*s and then cut through the wire located within the gla*s, in order to gain entry. PLASTICS: Plastic material is divided into two types: acrylic or polycarbonate. The acrylics are more than ten times stronger than gla*s of the same thickness and are commonly called Plexiglas. Polycarbonate sheets are superior to acrylics and are advertised as 250 times more impact resistant than safety gla*s, and 20 times more than other transparent plastic. With SLIDING WINDOWS the primary object is to keep the window from sliding or being lifted up and out of the track. There are many manufactured products available for securing windows. Here are some of the suggestions: PINNED WINDOW ANTI-SLIDE BLOCK SLIDEBOLT: It is not recommended that you lock a window in a ventilating position. This is an invitation to a prying action which can result in entry. Key locking devices offer no real security, and they can be a fire exit hazard. CASEMENT WINDOWS are the simplest to secure. Make sure the latch works properly and that the "operator" has no excess play. If so, replace the worn hardware. DOUBLE HUNG WINDOWS latches may be jimmied open. If a window is not used, screw it shut (except bedrooms). For windows in use, drill a sloping hole into the top of the bottom window, through and into the bottom of the top window, and insert an easily removable pin or nail. LOUVER WINDOWS are bad security risks. Remove and replace with solid gla*s or other type of ventilating window. Or protect with a grate or grille (except bedrooms). WARNING!! One window in every bedroom on the ground and second floor must be left available as a fire exit, particularly for children and guests in your home. At night, the bedroom window may often be the quickest and safest means of getting out Because of the danger of fire, decorative grilles are not recommended on bedroom windows. Subject: Alarms HOW TO SELECT A BURGLAR ALARM Burglars dislike noise - it attracts attention. A barking dog is a good deterrent in preventing burglaries. However, never totally depend on a watch dog. Some professional burglars have been known to carry delectable "dog snacks" in their pockets and with a full stomach, some watch dogs make friends easily and forget their purpose of guarding the premises. The most reliable safe-guard to protect your home and possessions is a reliable alarm. Many types of burglar alarms can be obtained for residential use. It is advisable, however, that basic hardware security measures be followed first. If additional security is desired, the following recommendations could be helpful: 1. Have a home demonstration with the alarm done in your home, not at their office. 2. An audible alarm is recommended over silent alarms for residential use in order to first - protect persons and secondly - property. A RELIABLE ALARM SHOULD INCLUDE: A. A battery-powered fail-safe back-up. B. A rearming capability and siren timer shut-off. C. Read-out ability to check working of system. D. Siren sounding device that can be installed on exterior of home to alert neighbors of possible intrusion. When shopping for an alarm system, take this list with you. SECONDARY BARRIER If the value of small personal items warrants protection, a secondary barrier is an additional safeguard. On a hinging closet door, install a 1" deadbolt lock. Store your jewelry, furs, cameras, guns, silverware and other valuables behind this barrier. Be sure to "pin" the hinges and disguise the door as best as possible.
HOW TO REDUCE CRIME IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD While we don't like to talk about it - or even think about it - crime is on the increase in America, and throughout the world. The number of burglars, muggers, auto thieves, robbers, purse snatchers, etc. is growing at an alarming rate. Now you, as a resident, working with neighbors can help reduce the crime rate. How? By organizing and/or joining a neighborhood program in which you and your neighbors get together to learn how to protect yourselves, your family, your home and your property. Working together, you can get the criminals off your block and out of your area. There's safety in numbers and power through working with a group. You'll get to know your neighbors better, and working with them you can reduce crime, develop a more united community, provide an avenue of communications between police and citizens, establish on-going crime prevention techniques in your neighborhood, and renew citizen interest in community activity. "Citizens Safety Projects" are set up to help you do this. It is a joint effort between private citizens and local police. Such programs have been started all over the country. Maybe one already exists in your community. These organizations don't require frequent meetings (once a month or so). They don't ask anyone to take personal risks to prevent crime. They leave the responsibility for catching criminals where it belongs - with the police. This is NOT a "vigilante" group! These groups gather citizens together to learn crime prevention from local authorities. You cooperate with your neighbors to report suspicious activities in the neighborhood, to keep an eye on homes when the resident is away, and to keep everyone in the area mindful of the standard precautions for property and self that should always be taken. Criminals avoid neighborhoods where such groups exist. Through cooperation with local law enforcement agencies, some of the things you will learn - and all free - are: 1. What to do in an emergency. 2. How to best identify a suspicious person. 3. How to identify a vehicle being used in a suspected criminal activity. 4. Signs to watch out for before entering a house or apartment that may be in the process of being burglarized. 5. What to do in case of injury. 6. What to do about suspicious people loitering on your street. 7. How to identify stolen merchandise. 8. How to recognize an auto theft in progress. 9. How to protect your house or apartment. 10. How to recognize a burglary in progress. 11. How to protect yourself and family - and much more. It's easy to get your group started. All you have to do is contact your neighbors and arrange a date, place and time for the first meeting. Hold the meetings at your home or that of a neighbor. Try to plan a time that is convenient to most of your neighbors preferably in the evening. Then call your local police department. They will be happy to give your group informal lectures, free literature - and in many instances, window stickers and ID cards. Remember, police officers can't be everywhere. Your cooperation with them is for the benefit of you, your family, your neighbors and your neighborhood.

Subject: Vacations HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME WHILE AWAY Be sure to lock before you leave, and let a neighbor have a key. When leaving your home, practice the following advice - it could pay big, big dividends. GOING TO THE MARKET OR OUT TO DINNER? A residence which presents a "lived-in" appearance is a deterrent to burglars. Never leave notes that can inform a burglar that your house is unoccupied. Make certain all windows and doors are secured before departing. An empty garage advertises your absence, so close the doors. When going out at night, leave one or more interior lights on and perhaps have a radio playing (TV sets should not be left unattended). Timers may be purchased that will turn lights on and off during your absence. Do not leave door keys under flower pots or doormats, inside an unlocked mailbox, over the doorway, or in other obvious places. WHEN PLANNING VACATIONS OR PROLONGED ABSENCES Discontinue mail, newspaper, and other deliveries by phone or in person ahead of time. Do not leave notes. Arrange for lawn care and have someone remove advertising circulars and other debris regularly. On the other hand, several toys scattered about will create an impression of occupancy. Notify the post office to forward your mail or have a trustworthy person pick it up daily. Apartment house tenants should also heed this hint since stuffed mail receptacles are a give-away when no one is home. Inform neighbors of your absence so they can be extra alert for suspicious persons. Leave a key with them so your place may be periodically inspected. Ask them to vary the positions of your shades and blinds. When you leave, do not publicize your plans. Some burglars specialize in reading newspaper accounts of other people's vacation activities. If you find a door or window has been forced or broken while you were away, DO NOT ENTER. The criminal may still be inside. Use a neighbor's phone immediately to summon police. Do not touch anything or clean up if a crime has occurred. Preserve the scene until police inspect for evidence. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO: 1. Lock before you leave. 2. Trust a neighbor with a key. 3. Be a concerned neighbor yourself. Subject: Doors HOW TO BURGLARPROOF YOUR DOORS The majority of devices mentioned in this report cost very little. All of them will help reduce burglary and make your house or apartment more secure. Begin with a home "security" check. Start with the front door and work clockwise around the entire inside of your home, finishing with the back yard, fence and shrubs, gates and garage. Shrubbery should never block the view of your front door. This allows an intruder the opportunity of privacy to gain entrance. A wide angle viewer in the door lets you know your visitor in advance. This item is recommended over using a chain lock. LOCKS. BOLTS AND HINGES DEAD-LATCH is an inexpensive lock set which keeps the burglar from simply slipping your door open with a plastic credit card. This method of entry is common in many areas, but are, easy to prevent. AUXILIARY DEADLOCK: 1" deadbolt, single cylinder with hardened cylinder guard, and thumb turn. For extra security, a single cylinder deadbolt lock, with one inch throw and case-hardened insert, is recommended for all exterior doors. If you have easily breakable gla*s within 40 inches of a deadbolt lock it should be augmented with a stronger type of gla*s or plastic to provide adequate security. Most police departments do not recommend double key deadbolt locks for residential use. You may be adding additional security at the expense of personal safety with a double cylinder deadbolt. For example, you could lock yourself in and not be able to escape in case of fire or other emergency. THE RIM LOCK is a 1" deadbolt lock which is installed on the inside surface of the door. It is less expensive than other types of locks, but equally effective for security. THE ?JIMMY-PROOF? RIM LOCK is another lock which is installed on the inside surface of the door. But this lock has vertical dead bolts, which is an approved locking device. CANE BOLTS: 1/2" in diameter by 12" high installed at the top and bottom of the inactive door offers minimum security. Many homes with pairs of doors, use half-barrel slide bolts on the inactive door. These are weak and totally inadequate. FLUSH BOLTS: Installed at the top and bottom of the inactive door or a pair of doors, flush bolts offer additional security, since the intruder cannot get at these devices to tamper with them if the doors are locked. HINGE PROTECTION Some exterior doors are improperly installed so that the hinges are installed from outside. To protect such a door from being lifted from its hinges by pulling the hinge pin, follow these simple steps: 1. Remove two screws, opposite each other, from both leaves of the hinge. 2. Insert screw or concrete nail into jamb leaf, protruding 1/2" 3. Drill out the opposing screw hole in the door. Do this in the top and bottom hinge of the door. When closed, the hinge pins may be removed, but the door will remain firmly in place.

Subject: Property HOW TO PROTECT CARS, BICYCLES, AND MOTORCYCLES HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CAR Always lock your car doors. Be certain all windows are completely closed. When driving, keep all doors locked. It is best to park in attended lots. If you must leave a key with the attendant, leave only the ignition key. In all cases lock your car. At night, park only in well-lighted areas. If you have a garage, the single lock on the door is inadequate to keep intruders from prying up the opposite side and crawling in. One of three methods may be used to secure the door: (1) Add another bolt and padlock on the opposite side, or (2) Install a pair of cane bolts on the inside - only operable from the inside, or (3) Add a top center hasp. Any person of average height can operate this locking device. The hasp must be of hardened steel and installed with carriage bolts through the door or gate. Use large washers on the inside. After the nuts are secured, deface the threads of the bolt ends with a hammer to keep the nuts from being removed. In every case, use a minimum standard exterior padlock. Don't hide a key outside. Most hiding places are obvious to the burglar. Never leave a padlock unlocked. This is an invitation to have the padlock removed so that a key can be made, and the lock returned to its position. Later, the burglar returns when no one is home and enters at his leisure, using "his" key. HOW TO PROTECT BICYCLES You don?t leave your car unlocked, so treat your bicycle the same way. Use an approved chain and padlock whenever you are not on the seat! Lock it to the garage - with a 3/8" x 6" eye screw fastened to a stud. The eye screw should be at least 3 feet above the floor, because this makes using a pry bar much more difficult. Whenever you lock your bike in a public place, chain it to a secure rack or stanchion through the frame and a wheel. Keep the chain as high above the ground as the bike will allow. This reduces the leverage for a pry bar or bolt cutter attack. MINIMUM STANDARD FOR APPROVED CHAIN Must be at least 5/16" hardened steel alloy. Links must be of continuous welded construction. Lighter chain, or chain with open links simply will not withstand bolt cutting attacks. Don't GIVE your bicycle away! Using anything less will invite its theft. HOW TO PROTECT MOTORCYCLES These expensive bikes require additional security measures. They must be secured with a mated 3/8" hardened steel alloy chain and a padlock of equal strength. Sheathed cable has not proven to be a satisfactory deterrent to theft. LIGHTING Good exterior lighting is important, particularly when the yard area is obscured by high, non-removable shrubbery. The best possible location for outside lights is under the eaves. This makes ground level a*sault more difficult. You can buy an inexpensive timer or photo-electric cell which will automatically turn the lights on at dusk and turn them off at dawn.

Subject: Shoplifting HOW SHOPLIFTING AFFECTS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY One of the most common non-violent crimes facing America today - and most of the world - is shoplifting. So prevalent is this problem, that most stores and shops automatically increase prices (as much as 10%!) to cover these losses. Shoplifters fall into several categories. First, there are the "professionals". They make their living by stealing - most often to their "customer's" specifications. They have to perfect their technique to operate...to remove labels with scissors or razor blades, that could incriminate them if caught...or by designing a "booster" box for stolen articles...or the expert use of "bad bags" (shopping bags)...or "booster" skirts or pants (ordinary appearing garments with bag like compartments inside)...plus dozens of other clever "professional's tools". Some take things they could easily pay for and perhaps do not even want. These offenders may suffer from kleptomania, a neurotic, irresistible impulse to steal. This is almost never done for the purpose of acquiring the item taken. While these people may not necessarily be considered mentally ill, generally "kleptomaniacs" are emotionally disturbed. The greatest number of shoplifters are "amateurs". Usually, they have little money, few scruples and an intense desire to own luxuries. Psychologists say the four most common urges and emotions underlying these crimes are: (1) Profound feelings of guilt, (2) A wish to be punished, (3) A need to prove their worth, and/or (4) An impulse to retaliate for real or fancied wrongs. These shoplifters are not necessarily ill or disturbed, they simply steal because it pays. Whether the item taken is of little value (as a candy bar or piece of bubble gum), or of greater worth (typewriter or camera), it is still shoplifting and it is still a crime. These crimes affect us all by being forced to pay higher prices. HOW TO TELL IF YOUR CHILDREN ARE SHOPLIFTERS No matter how young children are, they must be taught that to take anything without paying for it is a wrongful act. If a child does not realize this at an early age, it may set a pattern that could follow him into adulthood, with disturbing consequences. The simplest way to prevent a child from stealing is to watch him at all times while you are shopping and reprimand him when the act takes place. If this fails, take him to the store manager or other authoritative personnel and say something like "My son took this, will you please tell him what happens to people who steal." Naturally, it is a more serious problem when teenagers and adults engage in shoplifting. A friend or family member may be extremely secretive, but if they engage in shoplifting regularly, there are usually giveaway clues as to their activities: (1) Extra unexplained income, (2) Possession of luxuries you know they cannot afford, (3) Secretive habits during certain times of the day, and/or (4) Lavish gifts on friends and acquaintances. WHEN YOU DISCOVER A SHOPLIFTER If it's a stranger in the illegal act, notify store personnel. If it's a friend or family member, warn him first. If this fails, convince him to see a doctor. As a last resort, you may have to notify police, to save him from ridicule, disgrace and extreme hardship later.

Subject: Armed robbery HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM ARMED ROBBERY While purse snatching is one of today's most common crimes facing women, strong arm robber (hold-ups, muggings) is the most prevalent act where men are generally the victims. By observing the basic rules of "common sense", your chances of being victimized are greatly reduced. Since most strong arm robberies occur during the hours between sunset and sunrise, the best rule to follow is simply to stay inside at night. However, to even consider being confined to a secure area after the sun goes down is not only impossible, it is also ridiculous. By observing basic precautionary measures, chances of you becoming a robbery victim are greatly reduced. Here are some general rules to follow: 1. Travel well-lighted streets. Avoid dark corners, alleys and entrances to buildings. Always try to walk on the side of the street nearest oncoming traffic. 2. If you must travel at night regularly, don't carry more than you can afford to lose. One suggestion is to carry a second wallet containing a few $1.00 bills and old expired credit cards, which are normally destroyed or discarded. If confronted at knife or gunpoint, give the suspect the second wallet and concentrate on a good physical description to give to the police. 3. There's safety in numbers! If possible, walk with a companion either male or female. An armed robber is less likely to confront two or more, than a lone individual. 4. When waiting for a bus or streetcar, try to select a well-lighted area. Aim for a busy stop where many people will be coming and going. 5. Don't hitchhike or accept rides from strangers. 6. Avoid taking shortcuts through deserted areas such as parks, playgrounds, vacant lots, etc. 7. Be cautious entering your car - someone may be hiding inside. Or, when leaving your car - someone may be waiting. Park in well-lighted areas. 8. If someone asks directions, keep a polite but safe distance. 9. If you are alone and think you are being followed, head for an occupied building such as a bar, restaurant, filling station, fire station, etc. If none is available, cross the street in the middle of the block. If there is street vehicular traffic, try to stop a car for help. IF YOUR ARE CONFRONTED 1. DO NOT RESIST! Cooperate! Give the criminal whatever he asks for - wallet, keys, jewelry, credit cards or whatever, UNLESS, you feel he is going to kill you or askes you to go to another location with him! 2. Don't make any sudden, unexpected moves. A nervous criminal may think you are reaching for a concealed weapon. 3. If the suspect claims he has a gun, knife, razor or whatever in his pocket, never try to force his bluff. 4. Never try to be a hero and apprehend the criminal yourself. If you must resist, fight only to escape. 5. Notify police as soon as possible. Subject: Pickpockets HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM PICKPOCKETS The "art" of picking pockets is among one of the world's oldest professions. Author Charles thingyens' Artful Dodger is probably among the best known pickpockets. However, all are not juveniles - and all are not males! The skilled pickpocket is not the seedy character you'd expect to find lurking in a dark doorway. He (or she) appears about as average as you and I, in appearance and manner. Because they make a study of how to "blend" into the crowd, pickpockets usually remain undetected and can practice their activities with little hindrance. Pickpockets follow no regular schedule. They operate equally well during daylight hours as well as at night. And if you have been led to believe that picking pockets takes place only in crowds, forget it! The only known fact is that they generally focus on the public during times when they might be carrying more money than usual, such as during pre-holiday spending sprees, store sales, at fairs, carnivals, horse races, gambling casinos, near bank entrances, etc. While many pickpockets work alone, there are also teams of two or three which sometimes involves a female accomplice. A team with nimble fingers is next to impossible to apprehend. The first team member removes the valuables from the unsuspecting victim's pockets. He then secretly pa*ses them on to the next member who quickly disappears. When a female member is also employed, she generally engages the victim in conversation to distract or delay his attention. Contrary to what most think, experienced pickpockets do not place their hands all the way into the victims' pockets. Rather, the expert criminal reaches into the top of the pocket takes a pleat in the lining, then makes a dozen or so more tiny pleats, folding the lining with swift dexterity between his fingers. The shortened pocket lining moves the valuables upward so that they emerge at the mouth of the pocket. The entire act takes place in a second or two. The best protection for foiling pickpockets is to remove the opportunity of becoming a victim... FOR MEN 1. The target areas are back trouser pockets, and suit coat and sports jacket pockets, located inside and out. A pickpocket who values his freedom avoids front trouser pockets and especially buttoned or zipped pockets. 2. If it is necessary to carry your wallet in an unbuttoned pants, coat or jacket pocket, be sure it contains only what you can afford to lose. Keep large sums of money, credit cards, ID's, etc. in your front pants' pocket or any buttoned or zipped pocket; keys on a chain attached to your clothing. 3. Never "pat" your pocket to see if your wallet is still there. This notifies the criminal of the location of your valuables. 4. Larger size "pocket secretaries" are especially inviting to pickpockets - and relatively easy to steal. FOR WOMEN 1. Do NOT carry your wallet in your purse. Conceal it in a coat or sweater pocket where it does not show a bulge. 2. Use a purse that is difficult or time consuming to open. 3. Never let your purse lie unattended on a store counter or in a grocery shopping cart. If you have been victimized by a pickpocket, immediately notify police and give the best description you can.
Subject: Rape HOW TO SAFEGUARD AGAINST RAPE If you are a female, chances are 1 in 10 that you will be a victim of sexual a*sault. The attacker makes no distinction between age, race, appearance or any other characteristics. Common sense is your best defense against attack. Because every rape is different, there's no one solution for thwarting an attack. If you are attacked: A. evaluate the situation and look for ways to escape. B. Some women have avoided rape by talking their way out of it, acting crazy. C. Fight Back. A kick in the groin isn't usually successful because men instinctively protect this area, and you may lose your balance. Better is to stomp on your attackers foot or jam your fingers in his eyes. If you decide to respond physically, remember that your first priority is to get away. Act quickly and decisively to throw the attacker off guard while you escape. After an attack: A. Go to a safe place. B. Call the police. C. Preserve evidence - don't shower or douche; blood and semen are important evidence. And don't change your clothes or disturb the scene of the crime. D. Get medical care. Medical attention is vital! Many hospitals provide free care for rape victims and offer pregnancy prevention and venereal disease treatment. Remember, even if you do get treatment immediately, follow-up tests for VD are essential. Never be embarra*sed because of the incident. Though difficult to talk about, it is important to tell doctors what sex acts took place so they will know what medical attention is needed. Try to remember in detail your exact experience, for police records. Give an accurate and complete description of your a*sailant. This is extremely important! Your complete cooperation with local authorities may help in preventing similar attacks on other girls and women.

Subject: Traveling HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF WHEN TRAVELING SAFETY ON PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION 1. While waiting for a bus or streetcar, stand near others who are also waiting. 2. If the immediate area is deserted or in darkness, stand near an occupied building or in a lighted area until transportation arrives. 3. Once on a bus or streetcar. be aware of those around you. If someone looks or acts suspicious, notify the driver. 4. If the coach is empty or nearly empty, sit as far up front and as close to the driver as possible. 5. If someone begins to bother you, get up and notify the driver immediately. 6. Upon arriving at your stop, be aware of those who alight with you. If you feel you are being followed, go to the nearest occupied building and ask for a*sistance. 7. After dark, attempt to get off the bus in well-lighted areas. Use only well-lighted streets to reach your final destination. AUTO SAFETY 1. Make certain your car is always in good working order, with safe tires and an adequate amount of gasoline for your planned trip. 2. Always check your car before getting in - to make sure that no one is hiding inside. 3. If you have a garage, be sure you lock the door as you leave. 4. It is best to park in attended lots. If you must leave a key with the attendant, leave only the ignition key. In all other cases, lock your car. 5. Do not leave packages or personal items in open view in the car, place them in the trunk. 6. At night, park only in lighted areas. 7. If you are in danger of being harmed or robbed, while in your car, start sounding your horn until a*sistance arrives. 8. Never pick up a hitchhiker. 9. If you have a flat tire in an area you feel might not be safe, try to keep driving until you reach a safe location. 10. If you feel you are being followed, drive to the nearest police or fire station, or open filling station. ELEVATOR SAFETY 1. Observe elevator interior before entering. Wait until the next elevator if you are uncertain of any occupant. 2. Females riding the elevator alone should always stand near the control panel. If accosted, press ALL floor buttons. 3. If a suspicious person enters the elevator, exit before the door closes. 4. Before exiting from the elevator, observe the corridor for suspicious activity. Subject: Purse Snaching HOW TO GUARD AGAINST PURSE SNATCHERS Purse snatching is a crime of opportunity. You can eliminate that opportunity. Every female carrying a purse is a potential target. Senior citizens are especially susceptible to these criminals since they may not be readily able to defend themselves and pursue their a*sailants. WHAT YOU CAN DO Purse snatching is a crime that can be easily prevented when you take away the opportunity from the thief. Most purse snatchers are juveniles under the age of 18, who are waiting for the next opportunity. When you hide the "prize" you protect yourself. Suppose you are going shopping and waiting for the bus. You are by yourself and your purse is exposed and in open view. You already made two mistakes - you are alone and your purse is vulnerable. Frankly, your personal safety might depend on NOT clinging to that purse, even though it seems a normal way to protect the contents. Grabbing and shoving that may take place can result in being injured. There are ways to protect yourself, however. SHOP WITH A FRIEND, TRAVEL TOGETHER The first precaution you can take is to go shopping with a friend - man or woman. You're safer when in the company of someone else. If you must be out at night alone, stay in well-lighted areas. Walk close to street lights, staying well away from dark corners, alleys and building entrances. HOW TO OUTSMART THE PURSE SNATCHER When carrying a purse, women should have only 3 or 4 one dollar bills placed inside. Credit cards, currency, driver's license, keys and jewelry should be carried in a coat or sweater pocket, or concealed on your person to reduce the opportunity of large losses. If you carry a purse, don't wrap the strap around your shoulder, neck or wrist. If your purse is grabbed, a strong strap will not yield easily and you may injured. Some purse snatch victims have been thrown down and have received concussions and broken bones. Never carry anything more valuable than you can afford to lose. Always leave all unnecessary credit cards at home. When you shop and carry a purse, place it in your shopping bag. Never leave your purse on a store counter or in a grocery shopping cart - even for a moment. DON'T CARRY WEAPONS IN YOUR PURSE THAT CAN BE USED AGAINST YOU! You should carry your keys on a small flashlight where they're readily available. Make it a habit to carry your Flashlight or PPD in a pocket - NOT in your purse. And you should never put your name and address on your house keys or car keys. This is simply a way of telling the thief who you are and where you live! CALL THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY Most victims are attacked from behind. They don't get a good look at the attacker. And when a juvenile gets away with it once, he'll try it again. If attacked, call the police immediately. Try to remember all details - help your police help you!

The following is from some posts made several years ago on mma.tv from Mark Trip. There is a goldmine of great information here. I know it's alot to read... but you'll be happy to share some of the advice here with your loved ones.
Subject: Protecting Your Home HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM INTRUDERS SAFETY AT YOUR FRONT DOOR 1. Never automatically open your front door. Make sure you know your caller's identity before admitting him. 2. If the person at your door is a stranger, ask for identification to be pa*sed under the door. If he is unable to do this, do not admit him. 3. It is advisable to have a wide angle viewer (peep-hole) in the door so that you can check a person's identity without unlocking your door. If you have children, put one at their eye level too. HOME SAFETY 1. All doors in your home leading to the outside should have deadbolt locks. 2. When away at night, leave a light burning. 3. Do not leave a key over a door or under a mat. 4. The single lock on a garage door is inadequate to keep intruders from prying up the opposite side and crawling in. Use a padlock. But never leave it unlocked. This is an invitation to have the padlock removed so that a key can be made, and the lock returned to its position. Later, the burglar returns when no one is home and enters at his leisure, using "his" key. 5. Mark your valuables and keep an accurate record of all most valuable possessions. 6. When leaving on a trip: A. Stop all deliveries. B. Connect a light to a timer at "off times" such as 7:23 to 11:02. C. Notify the police and have a neighbor check your home periodically. D. Have someone maintain your lawn. 7. Be a concerned neighbor. If you see a suspicious person, car or situation, contact the police. SAFETY FOR THE APARTMENT DWELLER 1. If you live in an apartment building with an intercom system to the front door, make sure the landlord keeps it in operating order. 2. Never admit anyone unless you are expecting him or know him. 3. Never admit anyone to the building who is there to see another tenant or to deliver something to another apartment. 4. Anyone asking admission so that he can do some work for another tenant should not be admitted, but should be referred to the building manager. 5. If you see someone in your building who looks out of place or is acting suspiciously, contact the police. Subject: City Streets HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF ON THE CITY STREET Street crime is on the increase in most large U.S. cities. It is also becoming more prevalent in small communities. The following list of "safeguards" will help protect you and may even save your life! 1. When leaving home, make sure that all doors and windows are locked including the garage door. 2. Watch for loiterers and do not carry large sums of money. 3. If possible, travel with another person. This is especially true after dark. 4. When carrying a purse, women should have only 3 or 4 one dollar bills placed inside. Credit cards, currency, driver's license, keys and jewelry should be carried in a coat or sweater pocket or concealed on your person to reduce the opportunity of large losses. If you do carry a purse, don't wrap the strap around your shoulder, neck or wrist. If your purse is grabbed, a strong strap will not yield easily and you may be injured. Some purse snatch victims have been thrown off balance and received concussions, broken hips, arms or legs. Don't carry anything more valuable than you can afford to lose. Always leave all unnecessary credit cards at home. When you shop and carry a purse, put it in your shopping bag. 5. At night, travel only well lighted and well-traveled streets. Avoid unlighted areas. Walk in the middle of the sidewalk and never loiter in deserted areas. 6. Never hitchhike or accept rides from strangers. 7. Walk on the side of the street nearest to oncoming traffic If accosted by someone in a car, run in the direction opposite the way the car is headed. 8. Beware of people who approach asking directions; keep a polite but safe distance. 9. A good suggestion for men is to carry a second wallet containing a few $1.00 bills and old expired credit cards, which are normally destroyed or discarded. If confronted at knife or gunpoint, give the suspect the second wallet and concentrate on a good physical description to help the police in making the arrest. 10. Upon returning home, particularly after dark, do not linger at the entrance of your residence. Make a quick check for mail or newspapers, and enter immediately. If you feel something is strange, don't enter but go elsewhere and call for police a*sistance. 11. If you feel someone is following you, go to the nearest occupied residence or building and ask for a*sistance. If you are confronted with a dangerous situation, cry out for a*sistance. Yelling "FIRE! FIRE!" instead of "HELP!" will generally bring faster attention. Subject: Theft HOW TO PROTECT YOUR VALUABLES FROM THEFT One of the most effective tools you can use to retrieve property stolen from your home is a simple electric engraving pen. With this pen you can inscribe your name or a number on the most valuable items in and around your home. Before you do this, check with local police to see which they prefer you use - your name, driver's license number, social security number or whatever. Engraving your name or number on your valuables helps deter robbery in two ways: First, you discourage the thief since marked property is much more difficult to sell. Second, if a thief does steal your property, it is much easier to catch and prosecute him when he is discovered with goods in his possession that are easily identifiable as stolen. Billions of dollars worth of property stolen each year is never returned to the owners. Why? Because without some identifying mark or number, the police are unable to verify stolen property, or trace the owner. More than half the property recovered by the police is eventually auctioned off or destroyed because the goods have no identifying characteristics. In some cities, local law enforcement agencies will lend you and your neighbors an engraving pen free. In these communities, you may borrow an engraving tool for several days. If this service is not available to you, you can purchase an inexpensive electric pen from your local hardware store for as little as $10 or $15. This small investment could be worth a great deal more to you at a later date. Items already marked with a serial number - such as cards, TV's, cameras, typewriters, radios, stereos, tape decks, appliances, etc. - may not have to be engraved with your name or personal number. Check with local police first. If they recommend you inscribe your identifying mark on serialized items, inscribe this information just above the manufacturer's serial number. On unserialized property, inscribe your name or number on the upper right corner of the rear or backside of each item. Should you decide to sell or discard the item at a later date, you should invalidate your number by using the engraving pen or any sharp tool to draw a single line through your name or number from upper left to the lower right hand corner. Do not deface your name or number in any other way. It is also advisable, when selling "marked" property, to write out a simple receipt and specifying on it that you were the previous owner and indicate the name or number used by you. This could prevent legal ha*sles for the new owner at a later time. To protect smaller valuable items such as jewelry, silverware, etc., it is wise to take a photo of each item. A simple, instant type camera photo is sufficient. After you have marked and/or photographed ail your valuables, make a detailed list of these items and keep it in a safe place. When new items are acquired, add them to your list. As other valuables are sold or discarded, cross them off the list. If you use credit cards, they should also be recorded on your list. Either copy your account number from each card and expiration date, or you can have photo copy made for your records. NEVER use your SSN# as an ID number! This can be used to "steal" your idenity and cause all manner of grief! Choose another number.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas-3 elderly woman have been savagely beaten to death in their homes here in the space of four days last week.
The first victim, 82 year old Dorothy Barret was found Monday in her home. On Thursday, 60 year old Brenda Choate was attacked in her home by a man she said kicked her in the chest and tried to strangle her. Choate fought him off using karate moves she learned years earlier and called for help.
Later that day, Margie Gafford's body was found after a repairman--concerned that she didn't answer the door---called police.
And on Thursday evening, police discovered the body of Louise Tamplin, 81. Her brother-in-law had called police when he entered her unlocked home and found a trail of blood in her living room.
40 year old Gary Sinegal, who was released from prison in November after serving 21 years of a 60 year sentence for aggravated robbery, is being held on charges stemming from the Choate attack.
Choate identified Sinegal as her a*sailant but Sinegal denies involvement in the murders. Allegedly, Sinegal stomped on Margie Gafford's chest until she died.

Nasty surprise for robbers BY R.S.N. MURALI SEREMBAN: Four armed robbers fled for their lives when they inadvertently broke into the home of a Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) coach at Taman Bukit Intan here. The 28-year-old Muay Thai coach John Yong fought off the four Indonesian robbers when they broke into his home at 2.30am yesterday. Yong, who was woken up by the screams of his 52-year-old mother, rushed to her aid and saw that two of the robbers were busy tying up her hands while the rest were ransacking her room. Yong immediately went for them. He kicked the two robbers who were busy tying up his mother. They fell to the ground but the other two robbers retaliated by slashing Yong’s right arm and chin with a meat cleaver. He also sustained a shoulder wound after being stabbed with a screwdriver. Undeterred, Yong continued attacking the robbers, injuring them all. Realising that they were unable to take on the martial arts exponent, the four fled with only a mobile phone. Yong’s family members rushed him to a private hospital here for treatment. When met at the hospital, Yong said he wanted to teach the robbers a lesson as he was infuriated with the way they had treated his mother. “Luckily, my eight years' experience in boxing came in handy,” he said. Yong said he fought with all his might against the four robbers, adding: “At one point, I felt like the silver screen hero, Jackie Chan, when I took on the four.” OCPD a*st Comm Mohamad Abdullah said police had launched a manhunt for the robbers. RECOVERING: Yong being treated at the Seremban hospital Thursday. He is thankful that his eight years experience in boxing has stood him in good stead.

The pepper spray that my wife has been carrying for years has expired, so I bought her a new one today. I got her the 10% pepper spray that also has a UV die in it, which will later identify the suspect for the police. I have had her promise me to always have it in her hand and ready anytime she is walking outside and it is dark, or even in the daytime if she is alone. I had her put it on her keychain so it's always close by when she's going to or from her car.
So what do you all have, if anything, as a self defence weapon/ tool for your wife or girlfriend? What does she carry? Do you think she could realistically use it when appropriate under extreme and stressful conditions? Has she had any training on how to do this?
As a disclaimer I will note that the best weapon anyone has is their mind... if they can't use that well then the others will either be useless or just get them into trouble.

Thats a tough one to prepare for, for sure. If they milked the trigger so it would go off soon after they threw it, you can forget running out of the kill radius. If you could jump behind a barrier, such as a squad car that would seem ideal. Or if it's Bill that threw the grenade at you just pick it up, pull the pin then throw it back.

I'm not sure of what a good purpose this pistol would have for law abiding citizens, other than just for fun. Anyway, here is a short video clip showing the full auto glock in action. www.wimp.com/glock/
