I know how most people feel about Guard Pullers in competition. And i usually agree, but my mind is starting to shift a little after watching years of sub-grappling with No Gi. And analyzing the matches and techniques.
Coming from a wrestling background myself. I'm almost positive that in a two minute take down battle I could take almost anybody down. And i could defend takedowns from almost anybody.
But this is SERIOUSLY draining and taxing on the system. And in a High School grappling match where you go 3 x 2 minute rounds, you get a little rest between rounds. And even then, as anybody can tell you, wrestling is the most grueling sport out there because those two minute rounds are pure hell when you really grappling hard.
But in a 4-6 minute, or longer sub grappling match can you really afford that much energy? After expending all that energy going for the throw or takedown odds are you land in guard anyway. Also, you are chancing getting stuck on the bottom and getting guillotined, or somebody going around to your back. And for all of your efforts what are you going to get.....2 or 3 points??
I'm starting to think it's much safer just to pull some type of guard. That way the opponent has to expend energy to pa*s, and risk getting caught in a sub.
You don't have to just pull full guard, you could pull: Half guard, Butterfly guard, even just go to sitting guard and then transition to x-guard.......There are so many ways to play the bottom game. Also, you of course have the opportunity for the sweep also. Which can give you just as many points as a takedown for the most part, and usually you have a good chance to land in the mount after a sweep.
So all in all, I'm just starting to wonder if it's a good idea to waste all that time and energy on the takedown, when i can be using that energy more wisely setting up sweeps for points, and subs on the ground in such a long taxing no-gi grappling match. It would hurt my pride a little bit, because i know i can take people down, but is the risk worth it? Is the energy spent worth it? There just doesn't seem to be a favorable risk/reward balance at all in this equation. And you have to look at that if you want to be successful in sub grappling. Energy needs to be spent wisely and is a very valuable commodity in a competitive bout.....Winning First...Pride Second.
On a side note, i really believe Jacare could have won his absolute bout with Roger Gracie if he didn't engage in takedown battles with almost all of his opponents. I'm sure he was very tired by the end of the tournie.
