I'm real excited about this message board, filled with alot of information especially for an older guy like me. Ok, I'm 46yoa, started BJJ about 1.5 yrs ago and I love it. I've been in the martial arts about 15yrs off/on. I train hard. I lift, run, get mat time three times a week. My dilemma is that I always catch colds which set me back. I have allergies also that sure don't help. Anyone out there with the same problems? What do you do to prevent this from happening? I eat well, take vitamins , and hydrate. Any other suggestions ? Thanks in advance!

Hi John, good to have you here.
I have always had bad allergies as well. It is a problem. Whenever I train I usually have to keep a handkerchief nearby, especially for the first 10 minutes or so while I'm getting warmed up and my nose is running the most. I'm guessing you might be in the same boat. What I find really helps me is to take a antihistimene pill 30 muinutes or so before I work out, which really dries things up. I then of course have to drink an extra amount of water, so I take that to the workout as well.
As far as not catching colds, I'm not sure about that one as I don't catch them often. Good luck with that issue!

Hi Lance! Didn't realize you were a psychologist! Maybe you can help me.... although Bill says there is no help for me.

Hi guys . On the cold catching thing what you need to do is pree load on "Echinacea" this you can get from your local health food store. For the allergies see if there is a plant in flower of something like that near the training center (and kill it) no go to a good doc and ask for an allergie test then let me know what it is and ill tell ya what herbs to go get (I am a naturopath Dip Sm/Pfs) "dip sports med and physical fittness sicence" as for the antihistimene "DUDE DONT" what they do is restrict the blood flow so as not to transmit the allergie in otherwords it slows it down so the blood makes it "wet" not float fast to ya snoz . now when yopu train you need air a small fact most allergie's are in the nose the hairs to be exact so a trick that i use sometimes for people that have the drama is breath through your mouth (where you can of course)this makes it harder for the nose tickles to happen also drink loads of water . anyway just my say on that one.
