The pepper spray that my wife has been carrying for years has expired, so I bought her a new one today. I got her the 10% pepper spray that also has a UV die in it, which will later identify the suspect for the police. I have had her promise me to always have it in her hand and ready anytime she is walking outside and it is dark, or even in the daytime if she is alone. I had her put it on her keychain so it's always close by when she's going to or from her car.
So what do you all have, if anything, as a self defence weapon/ tool for your wife or girlfriend? What does she carry? Do you think she could realistically use it when appropriate under extreme and stressful conditions? Has she had any training on how to do this?
As a disclaimer I will note that the best weapon anyone has is their mind... if they can't use that well then the others will either be useless or just get them into trouble.

My wife and my daughters, by virtue of my job were kinda forced to learn how to use various weapons. It started out just to be famililar with what weapons I carried on my belt so that they knew how everything functioned. However, my wife is not a big gun fan (but not a liberal.. and I accept that. She carries a blade and CS/OC. The blade is by far one of the greatest equalizers in the hands of even the untrained. Blades are just nasty. She does not carry the CS/OC now because of our new baby and the only thing she has is the diaper bag but my family is a big fan of CS/OC. My girls 14/11 know how to use the CS/OC, what to do if they get it on them and so on. If I had only one option it would be the CS/OC. I know people will say that it does not work on everyone. But what they mean is that it will not "stop" everyone. It will affect their vision and it will open up opportunities that would not have otherwise opened up.

Personally wouldn't use pepper spray or recommend it, I had it when I used to be in bear country and the wind blew it back into my face, the black lab I had with me was much more use. I've heard there's some foam like mace that doesn't get affected by wind, but I have no experience with it.
I think a good flashlight like a Surefire or Streamlight is good to have. It makes a good fist loader, for both straight and hammer fists, and the light bulbs are bright enough to blind someone even in daylight. Handy for use just as a flashlight and, as far as legalities go, I don't think there's any country where you could get in trouble for carrying a flashlight, or using one.
