Coming out of a couple years of slacking, I have started working out with SIUMAC again. With renewed interest, I recently watched the UFC 47 fights. I noticed that the video was marketed as being a big deal between Ortiz and, apparently, an old friend of his (name I cannot remember). Otherwise, the fights were conducted in the same, fairly professional way that I remembered. I guess the gist of my question is whether, in my years of absence, the UFC has become more “storylined” like, dare I say it, professional wrestling?
I was always drawn to the UFC over others like Pride, because of the professionalism and how not “WWF” it was. Even in the UFC's own statements and website, they refer to the professionalism of their competitors. Boxing seems to be going down this path of back-stories behind bouts as well, although I must admit a level of naiveté in regards to that sport as well. I guess I’d like to open a conversation about professionalism in this sport and similar sports. What does everyone else think. Am I completely off-base?

Hey Red,
UFC 47 showcased Tito Ortiz vs his old training partner Chuck Lidell.
Your right that is and has been becoming much more storylined in it's evolution. These behind the scenes stories seem to get people interested and sell more tickets/ PPV's. While its not as bad as the WWF, it deffinetly has quite the show aspect to it anymore. I think that a lot of the fighters realize that they get more attention, and thus money, by making a spectacle of themselves. An exception to this is the light heavyweight champ Randy Couture, who is always humble and yet consistently brings a game that shames all the rest.

I was very "selfish" at first, as far as I liked the fact that only a certain type people watched, went to, & loved the UFC/Pride the way I did. I was afraid that it would become commercialized, or WWE like. But, unfortunately for the fighters to make any real money and for the sport to grow, this is what draws the crowds. But, I still cringe every time I see one of those cheesy advertisements where the two main fighters are standing with their noses pressed together, arms crossed..with the deep voice of the announcer in the background, "Two MEN, one Ring, Only ONE will be triumphant" lol, give me a break. I would prefer they keep a bit of the early ways!!
